Morphy Richards Intellisteam Steamer

Friday 26 March 2010

Rating of 4

The basics

The current king of healthy steaming; the Intellisteam features an count down timer that not only cooks your food, but ensures all the ingredients placed within its three compartments are ready to serve at the same time. Its keep warm function makes sure food stays ready to eat without spoiling for up to 40minutes after cooking, until you're ready to serve. Pre-set cooking times and a complete recipe book also take the mystery out of preparing steamed foods.

The good

Well built and surprisingly stylish for a steamer the Intellisteam looks great on the worktop and if you're really keen on healthy cooking it could almost replace your hob. With three individually controlled heaters, as opposed to the usual one the Morphy Richards is completely controllable meaning your fish won't be overdone before the rice is ready. The high-tech digital controls are simple to use, and there are plenty of useful features, including preset cooking times, a memory function to save your own personalized settings (great if you like your broccoli to have a bit of bite), and the unrivaled 40 min keep-warm function. There's also an alarm that will sound if the water level gets too low, and until cheaper steamers you can top up the water while it's cooking. All main parts are also dishwasher proof for added convenience.

The bad

You'll need plenty of workspace for it – at 25x36x32cm it is bulky – and almost as much cupboard space if you want to hide it away. It's also a little pricey compared to the competition, so make sure you'll use it for more than just cooking peas.

The bottom line

With clever timers and individual heaters the Intellisteam offers a complete cooking solution on the worktop. It's big and bulky, but if you want fish, rice and veggies cooked to perfection without having to lift a finger then this could be the perfect kitchen gadget for you.
