TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes edition

G-Rating

Rating of 4

The basics

The TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes edition comes with connection to the latest real-time route information, including TomTom HD Traffic, Road Angel Safety Camera Alerts, Local Search with Google and Fuel Prices. It also has a 4.3-inch touchscreen, EasyPort mount and advanced lane guidance. It's available with maps of the UK or Europe.

The good

Want high-end TomTom goodness packed into an affordable satnav shell? The TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes edition delivers on both counts. Firstly by packing in the excellent Live services, and secondly with the low, low price. Take it out the box and you're immediately struck by the awesome 4.3-inch widescreen. It's undeniable TomTom looks also scream reassurance, from its small frame to its thin bezel. Turn it on and it's as easy to use as ever, with Live services built in. That means you get HD traffic, local information and petrol prices. In use that TomTom simplicity comes to the fore with accurate directions and speedy satellite lock-on.

The bad

We say the TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes edition ischeap. And it is. But once you whack on that extra £7.99 per month for LIVE services you sort of start wishing that there were a few more extras thrown into your satnav for good measure (Bluetooth for phone calls perhaps TomTom?).

The bottom line

The TomTom XL LIVE IQ Routes edition is an excellent satnav from the Dutch master (and we're not talking Johan Cruyff). Good styling + good navigation + good price + good satnav.

Bought the XL IQ Routes edition last week, worked fine until I went onto thr Tom Tom Website to update the software (as recommended by Tom Tom. Could not find the back up facility, but decided to update anyway, big mistake. When you switch on now there is just an error screen. Soft resetting did not work. I do not feel that I should have to flog through their help desk to solve this, so I have sent it back and asked for a replacement. Not a good start for the Sat Nav premier!
