Apple iPhone 3G S

The basics

Unless you’ve been communicating via carrier pigeon for the past couple of years, you can’t fail to have clapped eyes on Apple’s iPhone. Originally launched in June 2007 to more fanfare than a trumpet convention, the iPhone 3G S marks the smartphone’s third incarnation, but it’s only just learning some of the most basic tricks in the mobile phone book.Video recording, a built-in compass to help with navigation, and voice control. All are new to the iPhone 3G S, but frequently found on smartphones and dumbphones from Nokia, HTC, and a host of other rivals. So what makes the iPhone 3G S so special?

The good

It’s that S. It stands for speed, and is what really pushes the new iPhone ahead of the crowd. Opening apps on Apple’s new baby is lightening quick. In a couple of seconds you can zip between functions, search through e-mails, find your location on a map or just listen to music. The iPhone 3G S rarely struggles with whatever task you throw its way, thanks to a hefty bump in its processor speed, and a much needed memory boost. The new functions are smart too: Voice control extends beyond the basic call-making abilities of the iPhone 3G S, letting you bark commands at the iPod music player too. You can even ask the iPhone questions. “Who sings this song?” for instance. It’s astoundingly accurate, and rarely fluffs the instructions its given. Likewise, Apple has crammed in impressive camera improvements. The iPhone 3G S can record video at smooth DVD quality, and boasts an autofocus and automatic macro mode to produce better pictures than ever.

The bad

On the software side, the iPhone 3G S fails to delivery anything drastically different to its older (and identically designed) cousin, the iPhone 3G. That's not exactly a bad thing, considering the older software was already starting high up on the curve.

The bottom line

So is it worth the upgrade? If you already have an iPhone 3G, we wouldn’t recommend the outlay. However, if you’ve yet to hop onboard the iPhone bandwagon Apple’s tweaks and improvements should be enough to convince you.

It looks amazing and i really desperately want it but it is a bit over-expensive for my budget, if it was maybe £300 it would be more reasonable.

Tried Apple iPhone 3G S and HTC Touch Pro II - Settled for Touch Pro II. The iPhone is fine for frivoulous stuff but the Touch Pro II is a serious business phone with the option to add the silly apps. To be honest I'm also sick of Apple drip feeding standard functionality like copy and paste, video or A2DP bluetooth steareo that I have on my 5 year old HTC XDA II.

I've tried a 3GS, moving from an HTC Touch HD and I'm afraid the Apple loses hands done. I use a phone for sat nav frequently and, although Apple are using this as a selling point, its only A-GPS and is very very poor, just take a look at the number of complaints on the Apple forums about it. I also found general reception for phones and internet quite poor, often losing a signal where I know for a fact other phones are fine on the same carrier. Emails are a problem too as it doesn't synch unless you have a Google, Exchange or Yahoo account, the Hotmail support is laughable and only one way, no sync and there's no Push yet, just timed checking which is okay. There's still a lack of multi tasking as well. Although its a lovely thing and the screen + processor response is fantastic to use, when you get down to what you need it for, it's still a generation away. I've gone back to my HTC which, while having a slower response, has a much better camera, multi-tasking and a range of sat nav solutions that all work very well. I'm not just knocking this, I tried really hard for two weeks to get on with this, buying any app that looked like it would get around the problems only to find in the end I couldn't live with a phone that lost the signal more often and not, didn't get emails properly and couldn't be used for sat nav what-so-ever. I miss the screen responsiveness which made the onscreen keyboard great to use but I think Apple have sacrificed phone, internet and GPS performance for the sake of an improved battery (over the 3G). I'd rather have to charge it more and have it working all the time. I also think they expect everyone to have constant access to wifi, like in the States, which we don't have here. If the next model addresses some of these things, I'll give it another try.

I spent an age agonising over should I buy the iphone 3GS & I'm glad to say it's 1000x better than I could have imagined, the word phone in iphone is degrading to its vast talents. I now firmly believe the world is split in to three groups; 1. those with an Iphone, 2. those with Iphone envy, 3, Those poor folk who just are not aware of how in the dark they are. A1+++

Don't have it yet, most def... gonna get one. 32g!!!!!!!! Love apple product to bits. every other touch smart phone has been made to challenge the iphone, so why get the sheep when you can have the Shepard. the iphone is the ultimate trend setter. for me if all other brands go to the point of calling their phone names like - iphone smasher/iphone alternative/iphone bitter/better than iphone. If you are confident in you product -IT WILL SELL ITSELF. the apps are just tops, and their are so many hidden feature that make it so unique. As far as the cost. putting the odd chip change feg change on Apple's gift card... makes it lighter. my iphone fund started a week ago, due purchase date is 2 weeks away at £100 a week not bad. contract(no thank you.) £35x18months+£275(for phone) add the odd unexpected high bill=£1'000minimum & going up.and you pay more for upgrade which is only available at the end of your contract. bottom line its cheaper and more budget manageable to get it on pay and go, if desperate fo a contract get another bus.

For what the iPhone does it cheap at twice the price. Just save up a bit more and buy it. Apple users don't mind paying the extra. its like BMW, Canon, Rolex, Churchill Shoes. You get what you pay for. Quality! Get a life, get a Mac.

Report as inappropriate

The iphone MAY be cheaper. The iphone 3g and iphone 3gs is becoming availible on Vodaphone, Orange and T-Mobile. They will have to lower the price from O2's price. Then O2 might lower the price, so we might find the iphone 3g and 3gs becoming alot cheaper. If it come down to £300 then I might think about getting it.

I've had smartphones from other manufacturers before, but nothing can touch the iPhone - nor get within a mile of it - I'm a total convert. The whole set-up is so intuitive, it almost feels organic. I got the 3G on contract 2 weeks before Apple announced the lauch of 3GS and whilst disappointed that mine doesn't have some of the S's functionality, I can look on the bright side and say that I enjoyed the extra weeks of usage. Love 'em or loathe them, the strap line on the Apple ads (we've got an app for that) is bang on. Why rely on manufacturer's own built in software, when you can get an app for 59p that has been designed (and regularly upgraded) specifically for purpose. Networks have forced the minimum lifetime on phones up to 18 months, meaning that regular phones become obsolete - not so with the iphone as (within hardware limitations) if a new idea comes out you know there'll be an App for that! If you don't like the way an App works, either buy another one, or speak to the developers as most of them are open to suggestions for improvements. The point is that you aren't stuck with whatever software comes pre-installed.

iphone 3gs - have one at last having waited for a proper £G iphone and one that is quicker. In my opinion the iphone is a fantastic gadget; Bad Points, Expensive to buy (chose the 32GB) Poor Quality Camera - should be no excuse why it is low quality Wifi drains the battery in a day with surfing Internet tethering should be standard - I have a phone a few years old which can do this. If you don't have one the adverts must wind you up. You can't access the files by connecting to a computer. No push e-mail unless you sign up for mobile me etc - there are some app that do this but not used yet. Good points: The user interface and navigation are fluid and second nature which makes it a pleasure to use. The apps make the phone or ipod really special - some are amazing so you are not just getting a phone but something to enjoy and spend time using other than just a phone. You get an ipod built in which is one of the best gadgets of this decade. Check your e-mails without loading up your computer. Have had other top end 3G phones for the last few years but this is the best for surfing and other applications, yes the camera is rubbish compared to my other phones but if you are serious about photography or a photo needs to be good quality a good digital camera is not expensive anymore. Plus I have found phone cameras shakey taking photos. Great phone worth looking to see the deals once O2 no longer are the sole network provider in the UK. My best Gadget and you should have fun if you bought one.

I have had my 3GS since September 2009. It was the first iPhone I had owned and I am absolutely over the moon with it. The touch screen UI is arguable the best out there, I will admit, I wasn't a fan of touch screen technology before getting my 3GS (probably because the touch screen devices I had used up to then had issues) but the touch screen on the 3GS really does work and is such a pleasure to use. Its very easy & quick to navigate across or up/down a web page with the iPhone. Also the massive screen is a real gem with its bright and pin sharp image. Then there is the App store, this is a hub for useful little programs/games etc. Basically if you are wanting to be able to do a certain thing on your iPhone, then there is a fair chance there will be an App out there that will allow you to do that particular thing. Its the best phone I have owned by a MASSIVE AMOUNT.

I've got the 2nd gen 3G phone, and it is by far the best phone I have ever had. I'm forever using it to check emails, and websites on the move - keeping in touch with my friends and looking for vacancies. I don't think there is enough added to the 3GS to make it a worthwhile upgrade at the moment, since the regular firmware updates through iTunes have provided some of the advances anyway, such as cut and paste. As for the limited camera - if I wanted to take good quality pictures, I would carry a camera, although the 2MP camera is good enough for spur-of-the-moment shots. Well worth getting if you have any other phone, as in my opinion, it comes with the best overall package inc. the App Store on iTunes.

All in all I love my 3GS, gaming is incredable and everything i need is in one place! All I can say is WOW!! Like everyone else I looked at the Iphone and thought does it live up to the hype? Having dipped my toe in the water and purchased a 3GS 16gb all I can say is that it does, and then some, Apps are a breeze to use and a lot of them are free (can't say anymore than that) The ones that aren't are reasonably priced. UI is a breeze to use and so is the touchscreen. My wife loves the Iphone and she is a self confessed technophobe and usually sneers at my latest 'gadget' usually labelling them a 'boy's toy' Regarding the cost, I got mine on a 24month contract with Orange (£87 for the phone then £35 per month for the contract) Sold my Nokia N95 8gb to Mazuma mobile (got £112 for it) so I am £25 up on the phone and paying the same for the contract, no biggee their! Only thing that I would recommend is a decent pair of headphones and a case for stopping any scratches. I have tried touchscreens before and to be honest before the Iphone I wouldn't have bothered. Can't stop playing with it!!!! (the Iphone of course). :-))))

Forgot to add, I have over 1300 photos, 4 x medium res vids & over 600 songs. Not to mention emails, Apps (5 pages of) and still have 4+gb spare. The camera is average quality, not as good as a camera phone but who cares?? I have now got a mobile that can link me to the internet, 'push' my email to me via my exchange server, play music and so much more without freezing, hanging, crashing and doing all the other things that my other smart phones did that I didn't want them to. My 71 year old Father had a look at the Iphone and he picked it up and started to get the hang of it within 30mins, with little to no help. Before you say "So what!" please understand that technology does not come easy to him, he even has a problem with adding a new contact, or sending a text, with his Sony Ericsson W595. Go on try it (Iphone) you know you'll like it.

This phone is absolutely brilliant and works very smoothly. The stand alone speaker, although a little tinny, is very good and setting it up, working the functions, getting apps', playing games and generally using it a phone a messaging tool is a doddle. I LOVE IT and would recommend to anyone who is a little apprehensive in whether to make the step. Well done gadget show for the review and congratulations to apple for making it happen. Thanks, Froggy

Honestly anyone that calls the iPhone a poor phone compared to any other phone does not really have the best view on gadgets and realise that the iPhone is suited to you. The iPhone is only as good as the apps you download for it!! If your not willing to spend time or a little money on the apps then don't buy an iPhone, but bearing in mind that is why the iPhone is so famous because of the wide range availabilty of different apps. What other gadget controls your entire house or tells you where else to buy the cheapest product by taking a picture of the bar code? So what it only has a 3MP camera look at all of the apps you can download to enhance pictures sharpen up pictures and edit colour of pictures!!

I have just treated myself to an Apple iPhone 3GS 32Gb model. In the past few days, I've spent nearly £100 on applications (heftiest purchase was Tom Tom Western Europe which is reduced for Christmas from £79.99 to £59.99). I've forked out an inflated £99.95 for Etymotic Hf2 headphones which are excellent, but need to be reported to Trading Standards. Their box claims you can redeem a voucher for free custom in ear buds. Unfortunately, the fitting is free, but the buds will set you back £90!!! Since they're a tiny bit of silicone, I suggest that the free fitting service is obviously getting a cut! Anyway, as a phone, it's very complicated to use, and that's because I'm not an Applelista! However, in the last few days of ownership (purchased on Friday 18th Dec) I have realised that this really is a breakthrough product. My problem is there is just so much this product can do and learning how to use it really does need someone to sit with you and explain it. You get a pointless manual in the box. Instead you're directed to a PDF file which for the tree huggers out there would be fine, but personally after shelling out £540ish I expect a comprehensive printed, bound manual that I can sit with a cup of tea and read. There are thousands of applications and some are amazing for a few pence and some cost a pile more. My largest purchase was Tom Tom Europe and I have yet to try it, but I have heard good things. I'm not one of these plonkers who puts the sat nav on in every trip, what's the point of that? However, I have bought it for a very special reason. I'm a biker and I'm going to connect it to my bike comms set up via bluetooth. I have also downloaded an excellent tube map which gives service information too and it's sister app the London Bus app. You can even get the complete works of Shakespeare for free, though for a small additional charge (£1.79) you can get the app with random quotes, line numbers etc. Best of all, for over 15 years I have been searching for a copy of "the World According to Garp" the film of John Irving's book. I have searched high and wide, and since it's a classic I avoided paying £50 to cowboys on eBay. I bought it in iTunes for £6.99......that in itself is worth the £540ish on the iPhone. The battery is a disgrace, but for an additional £69.95 buy the Mobie Juice Air which is a back up battery and hard case all in one. It's expensive, and it apparently lasts only 500 charges, but it will recharge your phone. I saw on one of the shopping channels (I was flicking!!) that you can buy a wind up charger for £13.99 and so I may track it down. I bought the Mophie to use with the Tom Tom app since I have a BMW with a non-standard socket on my bike. Lastly, I'd like to say that I do feel like a big kid with a new toy, but if you can afford one, you genuinely will not buy any other product. I've always hated Macs, and now I'm even considering buying one because I'm sick of Windows and how slow it is, oh and I get 25% off because I'm in education! Make sure you don't waste your money on the 16Gb version. If you can't afford the 32Gb, save up. After uploading my iPod music to the iPhone, my 32Gb had shrunk to 20Gb. That's because the operating system takes up 3.5Gb. Had that been a 16Gb, I'd have less than 6Gb for applications and films. The Garp film and the Tom Tom account for 3.2Gb alone. You have been warned. Happy Christmas everyone!

I foolishly got swept away briefly in the iPhone hype after many happy years of Windows Mobile. Almost got one until....HTC brought out the HD2. This is far more powerful, more feature rich, far better screen, far more flexible etc etc. In fact I'd say that even lower range HTC phones, like the Touch Diamond 2 are much better than the 3GS. If you want quality with no 'brand name' and want to be different, don't bother!

After previously owning the 3g version I decided to upgrade to the 3gs and there is definantly an increase in the phone quality. The video camera is excellent and the extra 1.2 megapixels also shows through on the stills camera. I woul seriously consider getting this phone rather than other competitors such as the htc touch.

I do not feel properly dressed without my iphone, it's better than my girlfriend.

I have both the iphone 3GS and the HTC HD2. I "have" to use the HD2 - because it's provided for me FOC. I got the iPhone as a gift - because everyone else said I was missing out - badly! They are absolutely right! The iPHONE is THE Phone for ease of use, navagability, speed, but most of all intuititive and FUN to use. I can understand now why everyone is clamouring for this phone, quite simply it's the best! I don't want to unecessarily knock the HTC- it's a great phone with loads of high quality features - it's just an absolute pain in the butt to use!.
