Alcatel OT-708 One Touch Mini
The basics
The Alcatel OT-708 One Touch Mini is a budget touch screened mobile available on pay as you go terms. At less than £50 you shouldn’t expect it to rival the iPhone. And it doesn’t. But it offers a 1.3-megapixel camera, 2.4-inch touch screen, blingy LED lights, a calendar, FM radio and music player. It measures 96x52.4x14.6mm and weighs just 83g.
The good
You might initially be drawn by the metallic coloured rim round a black front and back casing, and the way the blue LEDs under the screen light up allowing you to tap and sweep at them. The ability to bump the built-in 5MB of memory to 4GB using microSD cards is a boon, and Alcatel has implemented a side-bar which lets you drag widgets onto the main screen (an idea clearly inspired by Samsung). On board apps are basic but serviceable. There is a calendar, clock, calculator, FM radio, Web browser, notes maker, music player, and weather app that updates over the air (getting data from good old AccuWeather).
The bad
The USB is only 1.1 so data transfer is a bit slow – and you need to download synch software and get a cable as neither is provided in the box. Dual band GSM means web browsing is a bit of a challenge, and viewing pages in the small screen is about as fun as gouging your eyes out. And of course there are none of those flashy features you see on high-end touchscreen handsets like Wi-Fi, GPS or automatic screen rotation.
The bottom line
The Alcatel OT-708 One Touch Mini isn't up there with the top-end touchscreen handsets, but as a basic touchscreen mobile that's ultra-affordable it's a top piece of touch-on-a-budget.

I bought the Alcatel OT 708 on Monday 26th October 2009. I have to say it's a nice piece of kit. Mine cost me £30 + £10 topup (Virgin Mobile) from CPW which was supplied as a vanilla handset (no network branding which is NOT LOCKED to any network), it may be the cheapest touch screen phone in the world. It comes complete with a little stylus which is tucked away in the bottom of the phone. The touch screen is very responsive and very easy to use, theres not many applications on it as you would expect being in the that price b racket. It's not a 3g phone which makes the mobile web a little slow, but its fine for updating Facebook statuses and maybe a bit of tweeting. There is one weather widget which is pretty cool (no pun intended) on the front screen. The menus are easy to navigate and some leading brands could take lessons in how make the menus easy to use. The screen is a 2.4 inch and at the bottom of the screen are 3 navigation buttons that operate the menu which light up in blue. You also drag the widgets from the side panel to the main screen. I tend to drag the inbox and missed calls box to the middle of the screen. It has loads of themes and ringtones built in and it comes with game not disimular to Simon. This Alcatel 0T-708 Touch Screen phone is really funky and is also very good fun to use. can I just point out that it doesn't come supplied with a usb cable which is just a standard Mini usb cable, and the software suite also isnt supplied but can be downloaded from from the Alcatel website. It had a FM radio and a music player also bluetooth. You can add upto a 4gb Micro sd card for music, pics. It has a 1.3mp camera. An Apple iphone it isn't but then again you pay a fraction of the price than you do compared to an iphone. So don't expect it to do the same as the Apple iphone as it could leave you very disappointed.

I bought this phone when it was first released back in September for £49 on Orange, including a £10 top-up. For that price, this has to be one of the best phones on the market for under £50. It's touch screen is very responsive and resistant to damage and scratches. This phone comes in a variety of colours; silver on Orange, Blue on Tesco and Green from CarphoneWarehouse. This phone has some pretty decent features. It has a nice 'widget' section on the main screen from which you can access music, images, internet, messages and the weather and you can drag the icons to the main screen section to enlarge them. I absolutely love the clever little weather application, it found my town easily and its weather forecast is extremely accurate! I also like the LED light buttons on the front, they're very nice and also responsive and when browsing the menu you can flick your finger to the side, to scroll through the menu. The menu itself is very simple and easy to use and much better than other high-end phones I have personally used. As for multimedia capabilities, you can take/view images/videos and not just ones taken from the 1.3 megapixel camera built in to the phone, as I have been able to view photos taken from my digital camera. There is also a MP3 player and an FM radio, both work quite well with good sound quality. There is also a MicroSD slot(up to 4GB) and bluetooth built into this phone. Internet capabilites are okay for a GPRS device, but mine does not display Orange's web pages properly but displays every other web page I have tried as it should. As for battery life, mine seems to last about 5 days/week with a few calls, texts and GPRS daily usage. If you buy this on Orange, you get some earphones and a 1 metre long USB cable bundled in the box. Overall this is simply an excellent phone and I recommend it to anyone who is going to buy a pay as you go phone for under £50 :)

I bought this phone yesterday, it cost me £29 + £10 Top-up ! its a really good phone but the games are really hard to play and seem to take forever to load, also I cant find any new games that work really well with this phone because it doesn’t have a directional pad !!! So you have to use the volume key for up and down, and the LED touch screen for left and right. the touch screen seems to also stay going one way, even when you take your finger of the button, which is really annoying !!!! Over all I would give this phone --- 8/10 ---

yes it does have a touch screen qwerty keyboard and when you put mp3s on it (on a memory card) you can use any mp3 stored on it as your ringtone, hope this helps raych, it also plays movies in 3gpp format.

i got this on orange it was £40 for the phone including £10 top up (£40 total) this phone is brilliant its cheap very cheerful and extremely easy to use it came with a usb cable headphones (and obviously a charger) i have had no problems with transfering things it seems pretty fast to me the only bad thing is that you cant listen/view .wma music or .GIF images everything else is perfect i would choose this over phone over anything up to £100 seriously. 5 stars ***** its good looking , very easy to use (aslong as you like predictor text), and you can access the internet for free on the orange dolphin tarraf i go on facebook and ebuddy with it, it has a bigger screen than the averge phone, this is a must buy if you have a £50 budget plus then you still have £10 to go for lunch whilst you set it up. :)

i brought this phone on 19/12/09 and i think that it is a good little phone. it is cheap becuase you dont get the fancy features like you get on a iphone. the touch screen is really good the only bad point is that it is a bit small. it is easy to text and to call people. the phone includes a stylus (if you dont like to use your fingers). at that price i would recomend this phone to any body who is new to touch screen phones.

I bought this phone this christmas for my 10 year old daughter who like many of her friends wanted iphones. Great alternative and so much cheaper. It cost me £35 from Tesco, tones and light on it are very attractive and really make the phone. Easy to use with the sylus and drag functions. I'm not a gaget person but wouldnt mind one myself although I'm a nokia fan - they could really take some of the easiness of this phone into their models. My daughter has managed to do something to it as she can ring people, she can hear them but they cant hear her and i'm lost so if anyone can help that would be fab otherwise this maybe a fault that wouldnt be good after only 2 weeks of having it. great phone for youngster at a very decent price tho,

I got this phone for my daughter, how do you put your own music on the MP3 player ?
Report as inappropriateShauny09 January 2010
I got the phone for xmas and love it. The writing style is in sms type (1=symbols, 2=abc ect) If you are planning on putting music or films or even ebooks on it then you will need either a usb card reader or a usb cable AND a memory card as the phone memory is tiny. E books need to be brought and downloaded from the ebook site(around $30 a book). If the R section of the LED screen wont bring up the main menu, then press the center of the LED section, this will bring up a bar across the bottom of the touch screen. The last icon on that will take you to the menu. So far no games have been released for this phone other than the ones that are already on it and they are just demo's.

A replacement stylus can be bought from game or poundland but they are meant fir the nintendo ds but make a suitable substitute. The vibrating R can be solved by downlaoding the software updater from the alcatel website and downloading the software update. Also just a question is there a way to turn off T9/predictive text i have not yet found a way anyone can help?
Report as inappropriatePedro15 January 2010
Thanks Commenter 2010 :o) Please can you tell me if the ds stylus fits in the hole provided for the stylus on the phone as ideally I am looking for a stylus that will stay inside the phone? Predictive text can be turned on and off by pressing down and keeping your finger on the button under the number 7 on the keypad when you are writing a text message. I hope this helps you :o)

Hi Pedro... Thought I'd respond as your comment about predictive text answered a question for me - very grateful! I just bought this phone: the stylus fits perfectly inside the hole, so much so that I didn't realise it was even there, I thought the tip was a switch of some kind. It looks great so far, anyway.

thought I would write a good review on the Alcatel OT-708 (mini). FIRST LOOKS This Alcatel is veery small and light. There is a 2.4 inch touch screen which is very easy to use. On the back is a 1.3 mp camera. At the bottom of the phone is a slot for the charger and the headphones. on the sides are volume buttons and a lock key. THE GOOD Good Touchscreen- easy to use. Handy Swipe bar along the bottom for flicking through menus etc. Good camera (better than you might think) Good bluetooth and other key things such as a music player and a great calendar organiser thing. Great radio!!!! THE BAD Well lets not gripe about this awsome phone but there is obnly one game on it and I really dont get it!!! Bad internal memory TIPS FOR USE You really should get a micro SD memory card for this phone as as I said the memory is pretty poor Go on a good tariff!- I would reccomend Virgin's Addict tariff. So, if you want a great phone with a lot of features for a price which won't breack the bank- buy this phone! Thanks for reading- hope it's helpful!

I bought this today as the Vodafone 541, it's brilliant and for £30 you cannot complain, the touchpad is nice and accurate, the camera is really quite good (bearing in mind it's 1.3MP), the games are good (if only trials) and rendered well on the 2.4" screen. There are a few short-falls, the video playback is horrifyingly jerky, the video sound is abysmally poor, USB 1.1 transfers can make it painfully slow and, as it is a 2G phone, web browsing can be slow. 8/10 Verdict: A good effort on the whole, while there is scope for improvement, I shall take that for the fact that is was £30. It's a damn sight better than the Alcatel my mother had 10 years ago.

No need to return the phone if you cannot access the menu by pressing the right LED I think this is just a problem with the calibration and as you may know you access calibration by the menu which of course you cannot access but if you hold the lock button as if you were about turn off the phone, when you are on the profile menu the one with power off silent meeting etc hold the up volume button to access the top touchscreen calibration and hold down to calibrate bottom screen. I hope this helped

I have the alcatel ot708 for since march this year and it was well good for what it is worth, I did also have a 2008 lg veiwty touchscreen until i lost it, i found that for internet the alcatel is the best and for good buillt in games the lg was the best but now i have the alcatel now and i would rate it a 5 star to its apperence, 3 star for how long the battery lasts between charge ups from a full battery to a flat battery, 4 star to how it makes me feel. I find that the my alcatel ot708 phone goes louder than a iphone, most pc laptops and those 2006 sony ericson flip phone, what i also find about the alcatel that because the phone is a got a small 2.4 inch touchscreen it is easy to move to an application without accidently touching another application to open, The main reason i had got the phone is because it was affordable, good value for money, practical, compact, flashly with its apperence and simple to use. Its strength of the phone as i found is impressive with its protective like casing at the front of the phone and its plastic reflective cover at the back of the phone which is really impressive by it bouncing back the damage that the surface that might damage the phone slightly is good, i atchully find this phone really good, well it could do with more built in memory and to have some better built in games but really good all together.

Heey.. just to say that you can get alarms on this phone, to the people who are saying you can't (just go into the blue menu and click 'Clock' then you'll find alarms) When i got this phone i wasn't expecting a lot, just a working phone, but i was pleasently suprised. The camera is pretty good for its mega-pixels and the price was great for all the features on the phone. I got mine in acid green from the Carphone Warehouse, and since i had previously had a RAZR i also had to mini usb cable. The only game the phone came with was a memory game where you have to remember the order of the colours flashing and then click them in the correct order. Its not a great game but its fine for wasting a little time at the dentists waiting room. All in all i think this is a great phone; easy to get around and very cheap, in fact i would have paid more than i did for this phone because it was well worth the money. --- 10/10 ---
