Gadget of the decade - voting now closed
We're in a golden age of tech! But what's been your gadget of the last ten years?
The votes are in and being counted as we speak to settle the argument once and for all over what is the most awesome piece of gadgetry of the last ten years.
The last decade has seen an explosion of amazing gadgetry: consoles have become truly immersive, televisions have become so slim they’re almost invisible from the side and music players can now hold more songs than we can think of. But what’s been the best gadget of the last ten years? The one that’s made your eyes pop out your skull? You voted for your favourite tech and we’ll be revealing the results very soon.
To whet your appetite until then, here’s a reminder of the tasty tech categories we asked you to vote in…
Computing Forget computers with 1GB of storage. They’re best consigned to the 80s. We’re talking netbooks, the internet and sexy laptops.
Photography Fancy yourself as a bit of a sharp shooter? Then let us know which of these imaging devices are more Mario Testino than Super Mario.
Entertainment Robbie Williams once sang (pretty dreadfully we might add) “Let me entertain you!” Well, these gadgets will entertain you. But which one entertains the most?
Music What’s been the best way of getting your music to your ears over the last ten years? Which one rocked hardest?
Phones Style phones, cameraphones, multimedia phones… the mobile’s one of the most developed gadgets of the noughties. But which is the best?
This is where all the glory lies. THE greatest gadget of the past decade resides in this list here. But which one will win? Stay tuned to find out

Why do you need to have specific products here, what's wrong with general products and concepts such as "the opensource movement", "the mobile phone" etc.?

What? No G1 phone (puts iPhone where it belongs - in the bin). No mention of DECENT Bluetooth Headset (e.g. Motorola), lousy choice of hardware tech for computer group - where are the fantastic improvements in graphics cards represented? Windows XP? - Give me a break - Ubuntu Live CD! - the ONLY QUICK, EASY, SENSIBLE way to be able to practically INSTANTLY use &/or recover data from a Win XP system that won't boot. No mention of -N Networking - Qué? Why not? External USB storage - where's that? How soon the 3TB desktop disk?. Never mind the iPod what about the Zen? Where's the Archos? Now there's a TRULY great piece of kit - real multi-media & web on the go! I realise that it must have been a hard job to pick the list of gadgets, but this list shows a distinct lack of wider vision of the really great gadgets as opposed to those of the "badge" obsessed iPod/iPhone brigade. :-(

Having had a few hours struggling with a roll of masking tape (for the purposes of painting), I would like to put it forward as the most advanced product we use today. Firstly, if you try to use it on old painted surfaces, it refuses to stick unless you use enough pressure to damage whatever is underneath it. Up to 24 hours it MAY stay put, but at 24 hours and one minute, when you try to remove it, it pulls most of the underlying paint off with it. If you want to tear it down its length, perhaps to make two straight edges to economise on tape, it tears 90 degrees across the roll and you all know that, in contrast, if you are in a hurry or holding the object to be painted with one hand and the roll in your teeth or vice versa and need it to tear cleanly, it tears down the centre of the roll and you lose at least three turns off the roll because it has half a width stuck to it! Now we come to the clincher, try to stick masking tape to any shiny metal surface -it will not stick, but cut it with a pair of scissors and it attaches itself firmly to both blades, and the residue has to be removed with solvent - absolute magic! And as for trying to pull a long length off a roll for a pristine straight edge - forget it. That tape just doubles back and adheres to itself and every loose object nearby and gets tangled up. That stuff definitely has a brain of its own and is clearly more advanced than any electronic gadget in use.

Well, that's a pointless survey. Right away one of the most popular entertainment gadget of the last 11 years isn't on the list.... The TIVO. It invented the DVR market and is still worldwide number 1. There are 40,000 UK users who like me use their TiVo every single day. It's the gadget that's had most impact on my life. Only the most lame of users think the Sky Plus is a good DVR, and it's only because they've never tried a TiVo which has a better interface despite it being launched back in 1999.

Tough choices to make, how do I differentiate between You tube wikipedia and google earth? Also, Photoshop, flickr and Nikon D70? Ultimately I have voted, but won't tell what as I don't want to infuence the votes. LOL.

I couldn't agree more D D. My TiVo is easily the best gadget I've ever owned. I was disappointed (but not that surprised) to see it's not made the list, but Sky+ has. TiVo is so much better - if only more people knew about it! Now, if only they'd bring out a new HD version in the UK, I'd be first in line.

I agree with several other comments here that the list is too Apple orientated. I think Android OS should have been on the phone list. MUCH more advanced than the i-phone and as open source it will also grow faster than the i-phone can ever hope to. My G1 is running on the software designed for the Hero. How many other phones can be up to the minute a year after launch? I

Tivo introduced 2000 into the UK, clearly the winner for me, and especially as one of the few gadgets that gets 100% from the other half - many imitators but few come close. Also, missing from this list is the Canon 300D or perhaps 350D, the first because it was the first consumer DSLR and the second because it was the first affordable DSLR and where's the mention of the first mobile phones, a collection of modern phones does not constitute the gadget of the decade. This appears to be the usual gadget show pandering to specific manufacturers (Apple?) and not a true reflection of all that's was/is available. The gadget of the year should be one of those that creates a new concept (Tivo) or takes and existing one and improves it completely.

Wanted to vote for the internet, the obvious one in my books - but it was not there. So ended up looking at each category, voting for lots I didn't much about and not for the one I really wanted ! Also, voting not very user-friendly : click on category, move down, vote, go back, click on second category, move down etc - come on, I know you can do better than that !

I agree with Dominic, a general products would have been great instead of specifics. Surprised to see the OLED tv in there as they haven't taken off yet and don't look to be joining our homes any time soon, dammit!. I would have voted the mobile phone tbh, they have come such a long way in such short time...well, since the 0'ties. Remember the days when they were there to serve a specific purpose, i.e. to take calls. Now mobies are making MP3/4 players, personal organisers, alarm clocks, dicta phones obsolete. You can also now browse the web, use them for GPS's, scan barcodes to check prices, play games, read books and much more. Emerging technology such as augmented reality are going to make mobile phones even greater tools for leisure and business. The humble mobile phone seems to be something greater than it was ever intended to be, looks like it will be with us for decades to come.

I think you're all missing the point. Apple over the decade has revolutionised mp3 players, mobile phones, laptops, desktops etc etc. There are good reasons why the Ipod and the Iphone are one there. Second of all, TiVo is used by about 40,000 UK persons. Windows XP, Youtube, Ipods, Bluetooth headsets are used by millions nationally. Get a grip. Just because they changed your life doesn't mean they revolutionised technology.

The USB drive gets my vote; a simple invention yes but a markedly innovative device without much in the way of comparison which has had such a positive impact in terms of the transferal of data, ease of use, convienience etc. Long gone are the days of nasty CDs and DVDs for data storage yippee!!

Why Sky + and not Virgin+? From experience I think Virgin + is far better than Sky+ and I think I'm right in saying that Virgin+ beat Sky+ in a test on the Gadget Show? Surely it would be better to just categorise PVR technology rather than specific providers. This surely gives Sky an unwarranted boost?

If OLED TV can appear even though it hasn't been successfully marketed yet then something like Solar Roadways should be listed as it could revolutionise power production the world over. Likewise Korea's OLEV electric transport solution. For photography, the Dark Flash system is a revolution (I'm surprised the GS hasn't covered it yet). And where's Opera Unite. All in all, quite a limited choice of gadgets to choose from imho.

Under the computer gadget you've put web sites like facebook WHY? Its not a computer gadget its a social networking WEBSITE! Why haven't you put real revolutionary stuff like !BROADBAND! which as far as I'm concerned has changed the face of how we browse the internet forever, for one its made things faster to connect to the internet unless you like to brows the internet on dial-up and trust me I had it and I much prefer broadband, and two there is no way you could ever reach the speeds on dial-up that a broadband connection can manage and what about WI FI these are things that have changed computing forever!? Why was Windows XP and Windows Movie Maker on there when OS X and iMovie are miles better? I've only ever received headaches from Microsofts products and XP is absolutely horrible. I'm glad I was able to vote for the Macbook in the computing section. I think the Macbook White is the best looking laptop and OS X is superior to Windows. Windows XP, definitely. From what I've tried of Vista, that is pretty crap as well. I haven't tried Windows 7 so I can't comment on it. The PS3 deserves a place I think but it's a shame Sony have ruined the PS3 by removing features in favour of reducing price. My original PAL 60GB PS3 is far superior to the new models. I have chrome, 4 USB slots, card readers and I am able to play many PS2 games. The new slim version looks like a cheap rip-off.

Report as inappropriatecraggle21 September 2009
I'm dumbfounded by some of these selections. The title says best, not important or inpactful because if we go by best, we're obviously going to go by the newer products because they're better than what was released 9 years ago. An example of course is the first gen ipod. Is it important? Hellz yes. I won't go on about what it has done for music, everyone already knows that but is it the best? No. The newer models are vastly superior. Best =/= important

Totally agree with the OP; examples of specific products just doesn't work. Slightly OT, but how comes a TV programme about technology has such a poorly designed website? It's so hard to navigate to where I want to be that I use it far less than I'd like to. Finally: get a grip chaps; the show has nose-dived this season, the programme seems less relevant, less interesting and has somehow lost all of its pop. Not sure if it's time for new presenters (still love Jon though), producers or perhaps the GS has come to the natural end of its days. Thanks for the good days though!

'Vote for the gadget that made the most impact on the decade...' Well I thought it was the iPod 1st gen, without it you wouldn't have had the iPhone, the most revolutionary mobile phone handset of all time! Not to mention iTunes and all these mp3 players that were born with it, the docks and everything... It truly revolutionised the way we listen to music and had the biggest impact, it was like the birth of the digital age :) ! The ones that swung me though was definately the 3 website/apps up for selection... YouTube, full of hatred comments and stupid, annoying, poorly made videos, there is still some good in it though... and Wikipedia, free information for the whole world to see! I mean it's something... and finally Google Earth.. I mean come on... it has to be! The birth of Google Maps, and then when it was brought to the iPhone I found it the most useful but probably the least impacting, just a convenience! I hope I helped you make a decision or swing your vote for another gadget =p... Grant.

Sorry but this has to be to most poor excuse for a "Best of the Decade" I have ever seen. This is very disappointing and to be honest, a pathetic effort clearly put together with as little effort as possible. I'm sorry, but even though I'm a dedicated Apple user, there is no legitimate reason that the MacBook can be considered a revolutionary product. The PowerBook series was revolutionary, the MacBook.. well, just no... Although Windows XP is understandable but to put that in, you'd have to throw in Mac OS X and some amazing versions of Linux. This is the product of a sadly underpaid researchers lunch break brainstorm session. Hopefully there are other tech sites out there that will actually do this properly in the next year. Sorry Gadget Show but again you let us down...

The choice of catagories and specific products doesn't really make much sense. And it would have been good if there were seperate hardware and software catagories for PC. Putting the Xbox and Wii in, but leaving out the PS3 is just so wrong, lol. The PS3 has the best games, and of the three it is the most future proof, with firmware updates, and it's games being on a superior format (blu-ray) It's brought Blu-ray movies to people who would otherwise have not had it so early, not to mention the whole idea of having a media hub, which without the PS3 very few people would have taken to so soon, for music, movies, online streaming. It even had remote play with the PSP. Modern gadgets are about multi tasking, no other games cosole does that like the PS3:)

Windows Movie Maker??? WTF??? It is widely known that basic movie making on the PC sucks. What about iMovie? Yes it's part if iLife but so what. iMovie has revolutionised home movie making and the iLife package has helped sell many Macs. As I recall, The Gadget Show did a test on video editing a number of series ago using a top of the range Dell laptop and a lower priced Macbook with iMovie and the Mac came out on top.

Almost pointless with the Gadget show making the list of their own choices - what about the underlying technology that make the latest and greatest viable - from Open Source Software to the lower power consumption of the various ARM chips - almost every mobile has at least one ARM device and new ones have two or more - and it's a British developed technology as well. The later devices still to arrive labelled "Smartbooks" with embedded GPS, mobile phone, Broadband, and still work as any laptop with superior extended battery life are only possible because of the ARM chip. We all have our favourite, it is a shame the Gadget-show hasn't made an open selection instead of a limited subset, guess it would be too expensive for the show to run a more comprehensive vote.
Report as inappropriateSteve26 September 2009
Hi, what a shame that the list has been made up of branded products, that look more like a sponsors dream. This list should have been made up of product types - e.g. Mobile Phone, Laptop, Internet, DVD Recorder, Games Console, Freeview Set-top Box, Digi Camera, LCD TV, MP3, etc, the list is endless and would reflect our modern life as it has become, instead we get given a list of brands that sell some items which are not even worth the money you pay for, as better products can be found from other makers. Poor, very poor. However, the idea was good and it will be interesting to see the results.

Just voted! A little bit disappointed with the selection available to be honest. For me, GOTD is something that 10 years ago nobody had but today we cannot live without - the GorillaPod certainly doesn't fall into that category. Here's my top 3 GOTD: 1. The Internet, especially WiFi: The backbone of all good gadge! 2. The USB Memory stick: Awesome storage power in your pocket 3. Google Search: I think I've used it almost every day this century...

I could not get any voting buttons to work on either Opera or even Internet Explorer! None (or only one) gadget name had the Vote button next to it! However, trying again (for the fourth time I think) with Google Chrome worked a treat! (What a good thing I have three Web browsers installed on my PC!). Why doesn't The Gadget Show test these voting pages with all the popular Web browsers, to make sure they work, before users like me try and then give up in frustration?! I am sure I am not the only one who has had problems in trying to vote for the Gadget of the Decade! At the time when it didn't work, I thought the closing date had already been reached! LOL! Anyway, my votes have been cast now, and remain a secret! However, where are the Dell XPS PCs (like my 720 tower system?). These machines are brill for gaming, with their high-end graphics and sound cards, although I use mine for serious stuff, like digital photography with Photoshop 6.0 and playing DVDs and other digital video. Also, what happened to the forthcoming 2 TB Sony Memory Sticks? Imagine a whole two terabytes (give or take some space for memory card operation) of storage to play with! Also, I think palmtop PCs (such as my own HP iPaq 214) should have been in the lists somewhere.

To all of those who wanted to vote for the internet - doh it was available to joe public well before 1999, not a Noughties device. Not a bad choice of lists, but you should have had a list for Smartphones alone, there are so mant to choose from. But Windows XP, please.............Microsoft are so hated that every hacker out there attacks them, so they have to update all the time, slow your PC down to the point it's useless, or needs so much maintenance it's like running a classic car - come on what about Ubuntu, Linux has finally grown up, and is usuable by everyone, works great on old systems, and it's free!

Why are the Gadget Show so Pro Apple? Apple do pretty things, but seldom include actual new features, nor do they listen to user feedback. I cracked up when they brought out the iPhone 3Gs and advertised non-stop "If you want to cut and paste, we've got an app for that!!!" - oh please! I could cut and paste on a SE P900i, why did it take 3 generations of iPhone for them to realise people wanted that? Gadget show should not be so easily swayed by large corporations literally ploughing money into advertising like Apple do. This is just money they take from their customers (the viewers). -AS

The selections really helped me make the distinction between tech, and gadgetry. Tech has come on so much in the last decade e.g. nano, touch-screen/interface, processing/speed, wireless etc. It's purpose and place in everyday life has come on equally e.g. life enhancing, labour/time saving, good old fashoned fun! Then I looked over the selections to offer my judgements. Unexpectedly, I felt my decisions concerned matters of beauty or preference in use, rather than genuine contribution for the greater good. The list of gadgets underwhelmed me. Finally, I decided I'm not tech person, but love all of you who are, esp. the Gadget Show Team. Great fun, best thing on TV. Long may you gadge!

Sorry guys but gadget show has lost some brownee point's from me re: this gadget of the decade, no ps3 !!! i meen come on it has full hd, blu ray, free online gaming, linking to the psp and an add on so you can record the telly. yes the x box is good but to make the console do anything other than play games it costs and buying the "elite"version is almost the same price as a ps3 and it still doesn't match it for functions. as far as consoles go the ps3 is the best gadget but people vote for what they own.

Ok, i think i voted for the best things here, but a lot of it was a hard decision to make. If you do another poll like this, you could try to make it categories, like mobile phones, music players, games consoles and stuff. I guess that wouldn't be that specific, though, 'coz this was only for the decade and many of those things where made before 1999. Anywho, you could do a poll for the best gadget/gadgets of all time? Good work, though. =] Tom.
Report as inappropriateTom Pinsent06 October 2009
Oh, and btw, all you guys who are saying ps3 is better than xbox 360? The thing is, yeh the xbox has the red rings, but the ps3 has an equivalent - the yellow light. Your ps3 can get properly messed up and you get the yellow light. Thing is, when you get this, you can't even turn you're ps3 on anymore. I'm not sure how it works, but it can be worse than the red rings. Stick with the xbox ^.^ Take care, anyway. Tom.

MY BEST GADGET OF THE DECADE IS NOT LISTED. THE NOKIA 6630 WAS THE FIRST ALL SINGING ALL DANCING MOBILE PHONE. THIS MOBILE WAS THE FIRST 3G ENABLED SMARTPHONE TO BE RELEASED IN THE UK AND HAD THE SYMBIAN SERIES 60 OPERATING PLATFORM WHICH IS STILL USED TO THIS DAY. THIS PHONE HAD EVERYTHING THAT YOU SEE ON SMARTPHONES TODAY: EXPANDABLE MEMORY, WIFI, BLUETOOTH, MEDIAPLAYER FOR MP3/MP4, DOWNLOADABLE APPS, GAMES, THEMES, THE LIST GOES ON. FOR ME THIS IS THE GADGET OF THE DECADE BECAUSE THIS WAS THE PHONE THAT SET THE STANDARD FOR ALOT OF PHONES ON THE MARKET TODAY.

Much as it pains me to admit it, the gadget of the decade has to be the iPod. I can't see how you would argue otherwise! So much has followed its invention. Strangely enough though, I voted for Spotify as the music gadget of the decade. I suppose the reason being that the iPod influenced so much more than just MP3 players (Phones, PMPs, etc). Whilst Spotify has just had a huge influence on music playing (well...so far just music, anyway...who knows what the future holds)! N95 all the way for phone gadget of the decade, by the way! :)

Best ever gadgets of not only this decade, but influenced and set the standards in future innovative products in my opinion has got to be the 1st generation iPod, the iPhone and the Mac portable for the following reasons: iPod: Lets face it, we all have music CD's, albums, etc., that before the iPod came along the players were cumbersome and lacked storage. iPhone: The iPhone set the real standard benchmark and still does, in touch, apps, etc., which is forever expanding with advances in technology. The Apple Mac portables: These are outstanding and also set the standard benchmark in technological advances which others had to follow it's never ending lead. Since obtaining myself, I say to those who have Windows oh dear, they obviously like spending a great amount of time on their computer and have nothing better to do in their lives but keep getting errors, blue screen of death, viruses, hardware not compatible, etc., etc., etc......

I just started voting in 'computing gadget of the decade' and i don't get it - how can you put hardware up against software? I mean come on, a flash drive vs google earth? What kind of competition is that? I'm not sure on what merits I should be deciding. The most indispensible? That might make more sense, And why facebook over myspace? Sure, facebook is better, but if the idea is to award social networking then myspace really deserves the credit for starting the revolution. Maybe even friendster! I was very keen to vote but the choices are making me unsure what i'm really voting for! On the other hand, I am quite sure what the winner of the most confusing poll will be. Ah well, no matter. I love the show and that's what counts :)

The best gadget of the decade is the modern internet. If you know about the cloud and how that has revolutionised every piece of gadget hardware, you will see that thatis the greatest and more prevailing gadget of all time. Hardware will come and go, take many shapes, but the INTERNET will always be here to give them purpose. Alas the Apple army will sully these votes, so there no point.

Really really disappointed with this vote, not open, not up to the public to decide the winner, a list of certain products pushing us into picking from a narrow front. Seems & feels like it is being pushed by vested interests, not impressed , that more of the gadget show than this. Should have been up to us to pick items & products with an open option to enter any product we chose, would have been interesting. This, this just feels like a marketing scheme, PS2 but no PS3??? Why the Wii then and not the NES.... Big big let down....
Report as inappropriateCobraEcosse17 October 2009
Channel Five and the Gadget Show , please please listen to your public, your viewers and reassess this poll. So many great items not on the list. How can SatNav not be here somewhere... has changed how we navigate. Theres two games (who chose these??) on the list, what places these higher than others that changed gaming. Some consoles on the list but one of the major media usage changing consoles left out..no PS3?? I ask you..how??? Broadband/internet not listed...how???Why?? External hard drives for pc's, changed how we store our files, but not here. How can you choose one social network site over another, no twitter for one?? This has to be rethought or it will be so devalued and the public will feel it is a product led, marketing pushed, company based sham. Seriously who came up with this list?? Because it is far from even being close to being a fair assessment of the best products. Come on do the right thing, clear this out and have a re-vote. This is not right and I'm sure you all know this. Redo the vote with new products and an open slot for write in votes to choose products not included, the only way this will be fair. Seriously...come on , give the people a voice and let them choose for them selfs. Unless it never was meant to be fair & open....you decide, because seemingly we're not allowed to !

At my school, everyone is always taking part in the PS3/Xbox360 war. The only reasons that I always stick with the Xbox are firstly I have one. Secondly, they're cheaper. And thirdly I already spent money on a PS2. So thats why. Also, I'm saving up for a PS5 ;-)

Half these gadgets are just crowd-followers. What about some genuinely innovative products- OK you have some here, but what about sat-navs? Also where is the sony reader. I love it and its changed my small house completely. Thanks though and I think this is the funest show about gadgets around and I would love all the gadgets except the gaming ones as I am very bad at these. Awesome guys!!!

The Best Gadget of the past 10 years isn't on your list so ill just write it in a comment. I feel the best gadget of the past ten years has to be the Intel Pentium 4 Processor and here why: It's given way to the future of computing' only last year companies around the word were using systems with the P4 and still now many people me being one of them still prefer it to its upgrade. Without the P4, the Duel,Quad and the Core 2 Duo processors wouldn't of been born as the P4 Hyper Thread Processor is basically the foundation for most modern processors giving us the computing power we'd never thought we'd see in our lifetime therefore the Pentium 4 has to be the best gadget of the past 10 years

I hate to say this but i have to after the description on the xbox 360. I do not think the gadget show know their tech as well as they think. Come on you should not even be thinking that the 360 has more to offer than the ps3. Yes it has a good online feature and for a while there xbox did have the best online feature but lets not kid ourselves here the ps3 has came a long way and is the best next gen console and no one should even be comparing the xbox to it. In the words of sky "It is like having a super computer in your living room" anyone who thinks the xbox is better should really take another look. I have had my ps3 since the day it came out and i have not had 1 problem not one. As for everyone that i know that has an xbox they were not so lucky. It does not even have wireless and overheats so much that you have to buy a fan if you want it to last longer than a month. nuff said

I think the iPhone is really swish and very cool. I've allways wanted one but I'unno just havn't the money. But my mates got one and I'm just on it everytime I see them. So I had to vote for the iPhone for best phone. If I had to choose a second one it would defo be the Blackberry. I was supprised the iTouch wasn't in the music catagory. I was going to vote for that. Also we have Killzone 2 with amazing graphics. Its quite supprising that the ps3 isnt on there because hey give it way in the compitition and they use it al the time in the show like wen the were seeing if playing action games makes u relaxed and jason used Killzone2 on the ps3 and Gail (i think was the other one who took part) used flower what im pritty shor is a playstation exclusiv.

Infact sky brought the Uk TIVO and tried to banish it from our lives.I was recording, rewinding and pausing live tv back in 2000. Not only that but it would learn what you liked and recorded that aswell. So simple to use. Still widely used in the USA luckily for them it has the added bonus of high def and 3 tuners. Come back TIVO you are the gadget of this century.

It is quite silly how the PS3 is left out of this competition. Although it had a shaky start, it's had the best year this year and will continue to deliver in the future. Big mistake in leaving it out even though the other two players are both here, which seems highly unfair since the PS3 is by far the most 'gadgety' of the three. The show just seems very biased to me. P.S. to the one that said Sony messed up after the PS2, you do realise the PS2 was slow at the beginning and only really kicked off a few years after release?

I guess the problem everyone here is facing is that the last decade has been the most exciting ever for the sheer quantity and diversity of new tech in the market place. Hardly surprising then that few people agree on what is the 'best' tech of the decade - in any event, how on earth do you define best. Is it the most loved, the most used, that which has had the biggest impact, or simply and frivolously, the tech that looks the most cool? One thing is certain though, the next decade seems set for even more mind-blowing tech to hit the high streets than we have seen so far, or even than we can imagine. Perhaps that might be a Gadget Show competition for next year. If you had a choice, what gadget would you want to have in 2019 (or better still, in 2010!).

The show should change its name to "The Apple Gadget Show" it seems apple cant make anything that isn`t the best in category.

first of all none of the presenter know what they are talking about , firstly i would like to point ot that knowone in the gadget world or indeed the world calls technology 'gadg' not only is the title of the show is incorrect as the word gadget means small 'fun' device and simply piontless so when they review tv's as gadgets thus incorrect, also the way they review there technology is stupid and inacurate, for example reviewing tv's and they they do not alter the contrast ect to mak he best possible picture, also when reviewing an mp3 you need to use the same headphone simple science ' if one component of an experiment is changed all the overs must be kept equal' thus without this the test is unfair, also the pure idea of a 'gadget' show means that the shows need to be accurate and upto date to todays technology as apple fan boys will know the latest gadget can change is a couple of months so the gadget show must be at least 1 week up to date

The iPhone is gadget of the decade ? It's the only choice in the programme I disagree with. For a gadget of the decade I would have said the iPod or the mobile phone itself. But hey I am one voice.

Surely, although brilliant, YouTube isn't a gadget, it's a website! WiFi is probably one of the most important gadgets ;-)

Guys i think you made a mistake with the labelling. You say "Computing hardware" but the winner was Youtube.. I think you should have had a website of the decade and that would have made sense. Just my two cents.

Gadget Show Guys, appreciate the iPhone is some piece of kit (my wife has one and it is the nut's, I'd love one !!!). However........ it's far to recent to be the gadget of the decade. I can understand the iPod claiming this.(and so is the Wii, even though they are quality also) If you are talking of something that span's 10 years, then really Sky + to me was very clever indeed. Merry Xmas

iPhone, gadget of the decade? what a joke. I'm really losing faith in this program, so many good gadgets over the last 10 years and they go for latest mass marketed apple product. Pathetic.
Report as inappropriatealan15 December 2009
bry haines u r wrong. think about, there are 10 years 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 2008 and 2009 which is ten years (therefore a decade) in total if u include 2010 that would be 11 years unless you didn't count 2000 which they did.

This just goes to show how well Apple market their products since the majority don't know any better than to vote for the iPhone. (or any Apple product come to mention it) We all know that the iPhone doesn't do it's job very well compared to others and it wasn't the first smartphone to emerge during the decade, similarly with the iPod which has been shown to reproduce sound poorly in numerous test on the gadget show and again wasn't the first mp3 player. The might look nice but that's if no comfort if the gadget doesn't do the job! So dump the Apple products and present us with the real gadgets of the decade.

To be honest I think GIMP should have won rather then Photoshop because I generally GIMP is a better product and me saying this as nothing to do with the fact that it's Open Source. GIMP is used by professional and will as the general user and more likely to have more users. You got to remember you can download it on any platform and it comes as standard on Linux which has an estimated 29 Million users.... Which brings me to my other point... Over the last ten years computing as changed there are 4 big boys now... Windows, Apple, Ubuntu and SUSE. You to remember around two years ago it was estimated that Ubuntu had more users then Apple for a short while so it wrong to say in 2009 that a PC is Windows because a PC could be Windows or Linux... or rather Windows or Ubuntu or SUSE. In Britian now you can go to your high street or visit Dell on line and buy a computer with Ubuntu or SUSE pre-insalled. Dell are not the only manufacture doing this now. Ubuntu is very popular in Europe. HP hardware will always be plug and play on Linux...

Erm this show should be called "Apple Fanboy show". Iphone shouldnt even be the best phone of the decade. At the time the first iphone came out the nokia n95 was out. N95 was a pioneer in the mobile phone world. Fisrt phone to have 5mp camera first phone to have GPS with guided navigation. to name a few. All the iphone had was a touchscreen! (no video,no 3g no stereo speakers, no flash, layme camera, no java, no focus) In terms of hardware the n95 is still better speced then the newest Iphone. Apple are masters of propaganda and marketing, Oh and they are thieves and liers.

i think they'er wrong bout the 40ft pic challange. ok i get digital has given the world the right to take good and bad pics. but... my problem i have is when they made the 40ft cpic challange. im a graphic designer so i was taught all the different print processes. and i know they would have to scan the film print in were as they could just upload the digital pic. an there in lies the problem a scan of a film picture will become distored at 40-ft were as with the digital pic they could change the dpi to its lostest to get the better pic. its the same for billboards round the uk they are set at 72 dpi so from your car they look good but go up to one and they are pixalated to some degree.

I was disappointed that Apple won most of the Awards of the Decade. Yes, they excel in design and marketing but the customer pays for that deep in the pocket. Also I remember Creative Labs have a long standing legal battle' with Apple about the iPod technology which Creative believe is a copyright violation. The same goes for the technology behind the iPhone which Nokia claim is their technology. Apple products are no brainers ...bling. There are gadgets out there that offer far better value for money. What should have got a mention was the technology that was developed that Apple gadgets exploit. Windows has a huge market share, Nokia phones have a huge market share. All I agreed with was that the now fragmented digital camera market has revolutionised photography in less than 10 years.

well done apple grabbing most of the awards it shows they are one of the most sucsessful producers of amazing technology in the last 10 years... i hope 2010 will have even better technology. but i still think that the iphone is too expensive for normal people and that there are some good phones that are nearly as good . but it is still amazing.

i think this is disgraceful !!! by far the internet was a mjor winner - and an iphone ? too over priced, too slow to work, and with a miserable camera. they still havent perfected the phone - and it should have a lot more things added to the phone other then 'internet.' firstly - you have to access it on a contract deal - which is a rip off for starters, the pricing is far too high, an i feel these phones are not practical, not thought out properly, and are slow in useage. bad call gadget team. bad call. the iphone has many promising values - but it is not accessable to all people it is for people with a high income, and want fancy things such as a measurement tool. the graphics are amazing - i will admit this but the controls being uneasy to use and fingers are built a certain size. i feel you have let me down for gadget of the year. and i will now have to remain untrusting in your oppinions. thank you for the good shows, up untill now gadget show. yours emily.

I think the candidates were far too specific, software and hardware should have had different categories as I do not class adobe photoshop on the same level as a digital camera as I use the similar GPL software "GIMP" more for digital creations than photo manipulations and many other people are the same. iPhone did not deserve to win, there are cheaper and better smart phones on the market. @emily fletcher: The internet wasn't invented in this decade I'm afraid, nor was the world wide web. Nintendo Wii did deserve to win solely for it's step in another direction for console gaming, gameplay over graphics, but now adays it's graphics that are holding back 3rd party publishers. I believe the folks behind the gadget shows are just touching on the tip of the gadget iceburg and simply don't know what makes a product good, now adays the general public buy for names not for a good gadget (iPhone, Blackbury), I was a Mac OS user before anyone knew what Apple was, I program for Windows I know all the insides for that OS and Linux is my main OS to use, research more deeply into what you're broadcasting and stop acting like your sponsors (The real gadget experts of Britain name PC World as one of the worst PC stores for their exploitation of customer's computer illiteracy). I know no-one's going to read this or care, I just want to vent some of my annoyances. And don't say I'm being a grumpy old man complaing about how technology has changed so much over the years as I'm 17 years old.

the last 2 years the iPhone's dominated the smart phone market but wind back to 2000 when everyone had or new someone who had the Nokia 3310. The 3310's a legendary mobile, as i'm sure iPhone will be looking back in years to come. Its a close call but the popularity & market dominance of the 3310 clinches it for me. :)

Hi, Just watching your show on Sky+ so forgive the late reply, I have no issue with the gadgets chosen or voting system. My comment is about the 'celebrities' who are giving their opinion on the gadgets...No one cares, they have nothing to say and make me recoil in horror as I see Melinda Messenger or Anthea Turner giving their opinion on highly specific gadget areas. My constructive advice would be to get some one who knows what they're talking about on, a group of professional photographers having a discussion would have been riveting and interesting, moreover they would have been some way relevant to the subject. Neither Melinda Messenger or Anthea Turner have absolutely no knowledge of photography what-so-ever and even if they did, quite frankly no-one cares... Please (even if they're unknown) use someone with some knowledge of the subject versus some no-hoper Z-list celebrity desperate celeb. Your show is one of the few shows that I watch on T.V. - I love it dearly and want to see it keep /improve the successful format. Thanks, Tom.

Furthermore, just watched the whole programme... Mobile Phone: Natasha Kaplinski Justin Lee Collins Keith Chegwin Christian O'Connell (who?) Jamie Cullum (ironically should have been in the music section) Robert Llewellyn Paddy McGuiness Linford Christie Joe Pasquali Music: Dominic Littlewood Zoe Ball Jamie Theakston Danny Wallace Linford Christie Keith Chegwin Joe Pasquale We don't need any of their opinions, replaced with some of the bands that have found fame, professional sound technicians and recording artists / record company employees, it would have been a much better choice...I mean c'mon: Keith Chegwin, scraping the barrel aren't we? Entertainment: Iwan Thomas Anthea Turner (Again) Melinda Messenger (Again) Ian Wright Writers from gaming magazines or Stuff etc would have contributed much more in my view. Furthermore comments from those that developed the tech used for the winner would have made a real difference to the look and feel of the show for the better.

polls were to specfic. I dontagree that the wii should win , it may of sold more but its of a poor quality, controls annoying, the graphics are vulgar , cames are crap and its not 'social' at all , no network like Xbl or Psn. Xbox is coming out with project natal soon , and that looks better than the wii by far. xbox has sky tv and facebook anyway and is the most social, parties friends profile etc. but on the other hand they are good in their own way-wii for family and casual, ps3 + 360 for gamers...... my verdict though is 360 FTW

you constantly sung the praises of the iphone and while it is a great product you failed time and time again to mention its drawbacks. mainly the fact that it doesnt allow adobe flash player, this may seem minor to you but it stops this gadget being a true web browser. please in future how about trying to give a full and honest review rather than the normal pap supplied by apple. you let us down with reviews that arent full and frank
