Acer outs tasty eBook reader
Acer LumiRead – neat new eBook contender
Acer has just thrown its hat into the eBook reader ring with a gorgeously slim and impressively specced model, called the LumiRead.
The LumiRead is mere millimetres thick and offers up a clear 6-inch screen, boasting a non-glare, no backlit e-Ink display, delivering a paper-like reading experience, even under bright light.
It comes packing Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity, meaning that you can instantly download book titles a la Kindle. In fact, Acer has signed a deal with US book supplier Barnes and Noble to do just this. It’s also cramming in an ISBN scanner, that will let you scan real-life titles’ details so that you can save the details and buy an eBook version at a later date – crafty.
The full QWERTY keyboard should make browsing for your titles or surfing the web a doddle (there’s a built-in web browser) and Acer’s “Smart Download” service lets you save web content for reading when you’re ready. There’s also 2GB on onboard storage, which can be bumped up by MicroSD.
Acer’s new reader is primed for arrival in “Q3” of this year, so early Autumn. There’s no word on pricing as yet.
