Wheelie good gadgets

Friday 21 November

Which cycling gadgets will get the focus group's seal of approval?

We’re fitness fanatics here on the Gadget Show, and there’s nothing more that we love doing than donning the lycra, jumping on our bikes and leaving irate cabbies and David Cameron in our wake. The only way to make the experience better? By pimping our bikes with the latest tech, of course.

If there was any doubt that we’re currently in a golden age of gadgets, then the Garmin Edge 705, Bicygnals and Cy-Fi prove it with their wireless abilities. Suzi, Jason and Jon took this tech trio to the park and let a group of bike enthusiasts cast their critical eyes over them to decide which was more Lance than Louis Armstrong.

First up is Jon’s Garmin Edge 705 – a satnav for cycling. It does everything you’d expect from a GPS-enabled device. It sits on your handlebars, has 15 hours battery life, and even communicates wirelessly with a sensor on your rear wheel to measure variables, such as speed and acceleration.

Next Suzi checks out the Bicygnals. Essentially two strips of LED lights, they’re indicators that fit to the handlebars and the rear of your bike. And, of course, they’re wireless.

Finally, Jason tempts the group with the Cy-Fi – the world’s first bike-mountable speaker system. It hooks up to the handlebars and communicates, you guessed it, wirelessly via Bluetooth with your MP3 player, phone, or whatever you play your tunes from, while you ride.

Watch the full video here to see which of these gadgets will be hogging our handlebar space from now on…

Can't understand why Satnavs not in the best Gadget of the decade awards... Still, any satnav is a brilliant device for getting around and I wouldn't be without one. Just wish that they would display narrow roads as my Tomtom caused numerous problems when I went to Devon! Just as long as they shout out warnings that the cyclists are going the wrong way up one-way roads... as they frequently do... and of course, tell them to stop at red lights! As for Bysignals, great idea but if most cyclists ignore giving signals now then I doubt if they would be botherd to use indicators. Love the Cy-Fi idea too... just as long as they don't introduce a bass speaker system and power amp they will have to tow behind them on a trailer!
