Episode 9 - Future Tech
This week we take a look into the future and the technologies that may be part of our lives in years to come. In this week’s challenge, Jason and Suzi go head-to-head in a contest to design and build their own wearable future technology prototypes. Suzi opts for a pair of shoes that control an Mp3 player remotely using dance moves to perform all the usual functions of an MP3 player. Jason builds a wearable computer, incorporated into a futuristic-looking cool jacket that incorporates the latest RFID and peripheral technology. With thanks to all these guys who all helped make it happen. –

I can really see the jacket idea being used in the not too distant future, Everything that Jason put into that jacket was a brilliant idea. However I would definitely have used a screen in the jacket (OLED Maybe?) and not a projector. Working with projectors on a daily basis one thing lets them down......their not brighter than the sun! other than that wicked idea and cant wait for them to arrive bring em on!!!!! Oh and they've definitely gotta be made by Oakley :)!!!

I really do love the creation by Suzi on tonight's episode <3 Those shoes are to die for! I would love to own a pair. It is such a clever invention and perfect for any female who likes shoes. I hope some company gets ahold of this idea and turns it into a reality, because that would be brilliant. Fashion and the future combined into one!

I definitely think Jason deserved to win, however put a OLED screen in the arm, and take away the projector to lower the shoulders because that looked awkward, also take the purple light away from the heart, then it would look like a proper jacket.

I think the jacket idea was the best. It's an idea that could really be used and with things getting smaller it could get increasingly light. However my only problem with it is the projector. It was hard enough to see the screen just in that dark room, if you are outside then it is impossible. If you were to have one of those bendy light screens then it would be easier to see it and also it would make easier to inteact with. Susi's shoes, although a good idea, just seem to hard for me. It's hard enough to make those movements and what do you do if you accidentally make the wrong movement? I think there is a long way to go with that idea but with time may work. Either way I think the actually tech of the future would be that jacket. It was everything that guy wanted, everything in his bag in his jacket!

I think Hemmingway was missing the point. As all things in dealing with the future things change. If you look at how fashion has changed from the past to present. Somewhere someone had a inspiration/leap of faith. I thought both ideas had that futuristic feel. The strange thing was that they where infact both working ideas. When in reality the technology shouldn't of been available only the ideas should of been shown. That said Jason was spot on saying that these where only prototypes. You would have to look beyond the initial design and see the concept been used with future technology. You could infact have all Jasons ideas in a shirt (Hemmingway said some people don't like to wear coats during the summer) or a tie any clothing infact. Suzis idea also fit this concept that all her ideas could be used in any type of shoes. And regardless of what the future holds fashion has alway had shoes, what ever the season. For someone who has to come up with new fashion ideas I thought Hemmingway had a narrow view of these ideas. Top show, my family watch it ever week, so keep up the great work gang :)

I was interested that you integrated a pico beamer into a jacket on your show, but I'm not surprised the shoes won... both my wife and daughter thought they were kewl!!! I have done some research into pico beamers and think that some of your ideas are actually applicable today. A pico beamer could be used as an eBook reader. Some of these devices come with SD card readers are installed with a PDF reader. As you showed, beaming onto a surface close to a reader is not a problem. These beamers are smaller and lighter for example than the Kindle or other readers with integrated screen and could give someone a more natural reading experience... i.e. holding a piece of paper with an image beamed onto it. I'm interested in devices that can be used as ecoGadgets. I have developed dictionary software for mobile phones, PDA and games consoles, which travellers can use instead of paper dictionaries. An eco-note... for every 120 paperback books one tree is cut down which would provide eco-benefits worth two grand a year... I wont leave my web address, but you can work it out from my eMail address! Cheers interesting show!

Hi every one, defiantly Jasson's coat. with wrap tec screen almost here, the music will be there with it. why have the shoes. But saying all that light weight is a must, the coat garment, bit to much! Fantastic show! Keep it coming.

Nice idea.. Clothes of the future. But altogether a fruitless excercise. All that effort to put that kit in a jacket, like Hemmingway said, ties all your gadge to that jacket. Want to wear something else and you'd have to leave your kit at home. Same goes for Suzie's shoes for that matter. And thats why gadget clothing will never really take off. In fact all the things Jason tried to add to his jacket are already available in a simple (but clever) portable and pocketable device that isn't tied to one outfit. The iPhone. I think the show is great, and it was a fun excercise, but having chosen clothing, the outcome was always going to be pointless. And don't get me started on that "futurologist"! Laser-driven video screen contact lenses in 5-6 years!?? How, and more importantly.. Why? Finally, Love the legs Suzie ;-)

I agree with johngreen- the futurologists were way off the mark in my opinion especially when it comes to how long it will take- if they ever come about, even those special glasses he was talking about won't be here for at least 30 years, and why would you employ these people to tell you what they predict will be future products when it's you who decides what to make? Seems stupid Show was real good though, prefered the jacket, though I know a lot of people would prefer the shoes as they are a really good idea.

the mp3 shoes were not much better than a normal mp3 what if you are movingand it changes the jacket was robbed it was clever and ideal heres an idea put the heavy stuff in a shoe and the light stuff in a t-shirt or long slevedt-shirt

i think the shoes were a no good idea and the jacket was very clever and has potential you could put the computer in a shoe and the light things in a t-shirt jason was robbed

I think the jacket was a really good idea, although i would have replaced the projector with a screen, it could possibly be flexible, and touch-screen sensitivity would be useful too. :D I didn't agree with the judge.

I was surprised that the Shoes won out over the Jacket when Hemingway actually mentioned that wearable GPS would be an advantage. They could have easily gone smaller with the tech. I'm into small form factor - there's a computer called the GumStix - wouldn't have been able to run Windows on it as that's rather bloated but it can run variants of Liinux (before anyone knocks that you can guarantee that if you have a digital box, Playstation etc. etc. that will be running on something *nix based). They would have used what they did because it's easier to install and configure windows on that kind of device but a slimline linux/mobile phone style OS (Android would be another candidate) would have enabled them to produce something more lightweight. some kind of e-paper, e-ink design or electro-reactive fabric would have been better than the projector for personal display use (although a smaller, more powerful pico-projector on the shoulder could open up more intriguing possibilities for display to others). The one bit of the jacket that works perfectly well already is the RFID tech - although housing it in velcro compartments could allow for jacket control system 'upgrades'. The shoes were fun but I can see potential problems. sit down, absent mindedly put your feet together while on the tube and suddenly everyone else is treated to a volume increase. There's also the chance of accidentally skipping track which I have enough problems with normally without adding to it. Also music players don't have many practical uses but with the right software the jacket could even be used for some business purposes (stick a camera in the cuff, install mobile phone tech and you could teleconference via your jacket) and overall has much more potential. Plus heels were never my thing....

jason's idea was brilliant as it could be adapted in so many different ways. however, i definately would have ditched the projector and massive cuffs and instead had some sort of flexible screen embedded in the sleeve
